Presenting the case of Mr.Surya who is a captivating employee. This happened just few years before. After planning my yahoo Monday, I was in office with high energy levels, delegated the work to my team and was the first one who reached the conference room to attend a meeting with our prodigious strategic team. Just because I was eagerly waiting for this meeting to happen from past few weeks – it was about the rewards and recognition program. It was an interested meeting and every one of the strategic team have participated with enthusiasm. Once the meeting was wrapped up, I was ready with my list of activities to be performed in this regard. As a part of my process I started talking to different reporting managers, observing the related proofs and improvements and finally we have a list of nominees, along with Mr. Surya as he was congenial.
When Mr.Surya has joined we used to consider him as an introvert but once after his probationary period has completed, we started listening about his prominent performance. Initially we had a doubt if his reporting manager was exaggerating. But, when the similar comments were being repeated by his next reporting manager i.e., in his next project as well, the strategic team was convinced.
Mr.Surya was one of the best performers who has bagged fair amount of salary hike as a part of his previous employee recognition programs. We have never seen him tired. His spellbound knowledge in the subject has fascinated all his reporting managers. We came to know from one of his old friend who is working in our organization from other department, that he was very keen about this particular subject right from his basic education.
During the assimilation of his candidature we came to know from one of his reporting managers that there was an instance when Surya was working in their team. They had a daunting pivotal moment which was about to be the reason for delay in delivery. But it was Surya who made it possible through his substantiation and provided the best solution. Later when the concerned reporting manager has enquired him about the same, it was understood that Mr.Surya was going ahead with a certification course in weekends to update his skills and he has taken some suggestions from seniors who are acquainted in that multitude.
By the time he was bagging this best employee award he completed more than three splendid years with our organization, also he had an impressive experience of four years when he joined with us. None of his reporting managers who have appraised him could reign his convincing skills as he always keeps reports of his own work and speaks based out of it. That includes his Job Description along with time sheets and even indispensable dashboards if required.
There were some distinct instances where the reporting managers were convinced with the work of Mr.Surya. But Surya, he himself was not delighted with the same work. He always endeavour to give his best. He was not only a best performer he also tries his level best to help others when they are struck in work which made him stand as a good mentor in the organization.
One more splendid factor about Mr. Surya was, he prefers to be away from extraneous discussions. If he feels that it’s not related to his work he mutters a small phrase “excuse me” and the very next moment he will be at his desk solemnly performing his job.
When we have given the award we asked him – What did you do in particular to get this award? He replied “I never had any intention to be bagged with an award for my performance. The only thing I know is, I love my work and was doing the same. That’s all I have done”
It’s not about Mr.Surya alone, after talking with many of my official acquaintance right from a fresher to experience, i.e., whom I have mentored and who mentored me, I feel that we often forget what to do – to be the best. To be frank it’s very simple to be the best if we follow some tips which I have learned from my mentors and some other through my own experiences. They are as follows:
Choose your passion as your profession:
My first and fore most suggestion for you to be a best performer is to choose your passion as your profession as you can do miracles with that. To understand in a better way let us understand the following aspects in detail:
You will have good Job satisfaction: The job satisfaction levels will be high, as you tend to provide effective and efficient results always.
You can manage the Time constraints: Even in case of any extended timings you would love to go ahead and complete the task irrespective of excess time as you love to perform the task.
Your perspective of earning aspect will be unique: You can only talk about happily earned money but not hard earned money.
You can easily handle challenges: In case of any challenges to be faced, you will be considering that as new concept or new way of performing the task, rather than considering it as a challenge.
Be a continuous learner:
Try your level best to master the subject. You can adopt any method for this. Reading related books, browsing on related topics, participating in discussions, taking help of a mentor etc., whatever it is keep your level best of time to master the subject.
Stay focussed on your current task:
Concentrate on the task which has to be performed “RIGHT NOW”. Work on the task as you have to complete the task but not for some appreciation or bagging an award. You may have distractions, but your focus should be on completing the task in expected way.
It is always preferable to maintain reports of whatever the work you do. It shall include the time sheets which helps to improve your efficiency. A daily to do list also helps you organize your work. These reports helps you not to deviate from your job description.
Be a self-appraiser of your own work
Once after completing the task, evaluate it from your end. Check in case of any mistakes, before submitting to the concerned reporting authorities. If you would like to go ahead with changes which can further improvise your work you may proceed with the same. Submit the work only when you are confident about it.
One can be transcendent performer by choosing the passion as career, focus on current activity and maintaining the career goal as – to perform well in the current job rather than dreaming about bagging an award for the performance.
