How many of us are deeply concentrating on do’s and do not’s while applying for a job? It is not simply uploading the resume in job portal, wait for an e-mail or phone call, attend the interview and proceed accordingly. It’s something beyond this.
In this incessantly evolving talent acquisition process, the way of getting into job has changed a lot when compared to the previous methods that are followed in Last decade.
The expectations of the Organizations in alliance with HR team started changing w.r.t the job applicants. Talent acquisition associates/ recruiters started getting attracted towards the candidates who are more focussed towards the job.
This particular case of Ms. Sudha who has attracted the organization with her overhauling approach helps us understand how mutual reckoning transpire between a candidate and an organization.
As we have some mass recruitment to be done in an IT firm, we have posted all the requirements in all the proper channels of communication like job portals, social media etc., and started receiving the resumes. Once the sourcing and screening was done, as a part of our shortlisting process we started conducting the telephonic round to clarify certain doubts that we have regarding their profiles.
The basic details of our requirement were, experience – 2-4 years, Job location is Bangalore, Have profound knowledge in the required technology and the job description goes on. While we were screening Ms. Sudha’s Profile, which was received in response to the job posting we have done in a job portal seems to have a gap of 6 months in her resume. This gap was seen after her education and getting into her 1st job in which she is still continuing from past three and half years continuously. When we have asked her about this she said that it was because her parent’s got transferred to other city during that tenure and as she was the elder one in the family need to help her siblings get into their higher education in new city by helping them crack their entrance tests.
When we were checking with her that if she has undergone any skill enhancement programs during that tenure. She replied in a bold voice “That was a gap and I don’t want to cover that gap by lying something.” We were really impressed with her sincerity and scheduled her technical round of interview.
She was always on time to the interviews and even if she was getting late or couldn’t not take up any call/s she was intimating us in anticipation either or other means. As a HR I really appreciate that as she was respecting other’s time.
On the day of interview we have noticed that, this lady was very much confident. When we discussed her candidature with the technical team we came to know that she was not a 100% suitable candidate. But she was very much open to say that she was not aware of certain concepts. The technical team said that she can be trained and we can bring her into our expectations as her attitude was very sincere. Yes she has already informed us before attending the interview that she is also attending interviews with other organization and will be choosing the best.
Entire panel was impressed with her candidature as well as her attitude. I myself being one of the panel member, while taking up the interview just made a note of her e-mail id to release the offer.
When we have finalised her before discussing about her offer, we checked her profiles in social media. She has got good recommendations from her previous employers which were matching with what we have observed during the selection process. She was very much interested in the subject and was doing all relevant postings in social media and was not at all into any litigant discussions.
Actually she has 1 month notice period to be served in her previous organization. When we asked her to join in 15 days she said that she can’t leave her previous organization without completing the knowledge transfer for the new associate who will be replacing her role. This was one more impressive aspect.
After four months from this incident, she has become our employee and was signing the Job confirmation after completing her probationary period. She was Ms. Sudha the amazing candidate who turned out as a reliable employee.
One fine day I could see her at canteen after her 2 or 3 weeks of service and asked her what mad e you join our company? She replied “Mam the anticipated project from U.K was very fascinating that has attracted me a lot.” I was surprised. The news about this particular project was specified only by our CEO in one of the professional social media website 1 month before posting this job vacancy. Hardly 4 to 5 of the strategic team were aware of this project. I was very much impressed with the way she has explored about the organization and its upcoming projects.
I started getting deep into her exploring ways. She has also enquired about what all the departments we have. What is our work culture? And what we do? (Through proper channels). Not a deep knowledge but something which has attracted her towards the job.
She ended that discussion by saying that she need to attend some online sessions which starts after our office hours. She always mould herself to be a perfect fit and she was getting ready for the next project in which she was very much interested.
After 1 year when it was the time for appraisals and when the organization planned to increase the size of base level managers, Unanimously Ms. Sudha was the first choice of everyone. Also she stood as the best employee of that year. Our HR team was very much proud enough to proffer such a nugget to the organization.
It was a mutual reckoning happened in her case – she was interested to be a part of our growing organization and we were interested in her focussed approach, sincerity and dedication.
It can be the case of a fresher or a candidate with certain experience, whichever the case is, please follow these suggestions which helps you to understand what to do and what not to do while applying for a job:
Explore the organization: Know about the organization completely. What are the technology/ies they are using? What are the verticals they are into? How long it has been in the market right after from inception? Who are the clients? You may not get the in depth knowledge of their projects. But at least try to know as much as you can in an acceptable way.
Understand the Job description: While applying for the job go through the Job description (JD) and ensure that you can do all the tasks as specified in JD. If you feel that you are lagging in any concept, feel free to ask if you can be provided with training in that particular concept. Don’t expect the organization to make you sit and learn the entire subject.
Don’t use copy and paste option liberally: Simply copying and pasting the objectives of resumes or projects may not serve the purpose. Presenting your own attributes are always appreciable.
Be sincere in all the communications. It can be about your education or previous experience or even if it can be about any pay package, in case of any discrepancy it’s better to inform the complete details to the organization before the selection process starts, as it can save every one’ valuable time. Inform everything openly. Don’t bluff anything as you are in a hurry to get into job.
In case of any obstacles to stick with the timings, kindly inform in anticipation.
Don’t waste other’s time by confirming that you are coming for interview and not responding to calls. If you are not interested, it’s better to inform it directly rather than killing a died ancestor while you have to attend the interview.
Stature in social media: There are some professional social media websites in which you can explore your subject and ensure that anyone who are watching your profile should have a good professional impression. Getting into litigant discussions in social media websites may not give good impression over your candidature.
Don’t play with different offers in hand: You have every right to choose the best job. But definitely not at the cost of some one’s valuable time and expectations.
Regarding notice period: Let the new organization know the exact notice period. We have observed that some candidate’s over promise saying that they will join in 15 days or 1 month though their notice period in current organization is 3 months. Finally it becomes a chaos at the end and the candidate will not be able to join as per the committed date. This may lead to delay in project which would cost high for an organization.
Read the offer letter/ appointment letter completely: It can be 5 pages or 10 pages whatever the number of pages it constitutes of, read the entire document thoroughly and understand all the points before signing. Once you have signed, it means you are legally bound to the terms and conditions mentioned in the letter. Later on if you have missed a point and say I did not read the letter completely, it’s not the fault of organization.
Ask all the questions before joining: If you don’t know anything ask the recruiter or HR personnel. Don’t assume anything. It is your duty to ask everything. It can be about scope of your career growth, trainings, appraisals, salary breakups, tax related queries anything… Give commitment only when you are confident about the details. Don’t blame anyone after joining the organization saying that you don’t know.
Skill enhancement: Either you are in a job or in search of a new job, keep on enhancing your skills in this emerging technological world.
Be yourself as you are by exploring the job and anticipated growth in the organization with a focussed approach in tandem with positive attitude.
